Williamstown Election Off To Sluggish Start

By Susan Bush
12:00AM / Wednesday, February 22, 2006

Williamstown - The town's election season is off to a sluggish start; as of the morning of Feb. 22, one Selectmen's challenger, one elementary school school committee incumbent, and the town moderator incumbent had taken out nomination papers for the May 9 town election.

Town Clerk Mary C. Kennedy said that Richard Steege of 805 Henderson Road has taken out papers seeking a three-year selectman's term. The incumbent, Selectman John G. Merselis, of 153 Hancock Road, has not taken out papers. Merselis said that he will announce his election intentions during a scheduled Feb. 27 Selectmen's meeting.

The meeting is expected to begin at 7 p.m. at the town municipal building.

Judith Fraser, of 27 Colonial Ave., has taken out papers seeking reelection to a three-year Williamstown Elementary School School Committee term. A three-year elementary school school committee term held by Suzanne Dewey of 17 Cole Ave. expires this year; Dewey has yet to take out nomination papers.

A one-year town moderator term held by Stanley Parese, 27 Colonial Ave., will be included on the election ballot. Parese is seeking reelection as town moderator, he said.

This year's town meeting warrant is expected to include an article asking that the town moderator's term be increased to three years.

David and Joyce Milne Public Library Board of Trustees incumbent Lisa Hiley of 116 Southworth St. had not taken out nomination papers seeking reelection to a three-year trustee term as of the morning of Feb. 22.

Northern Berkshire Regional Vocational School District School Committee incumbent Thomas Mahar of 495 Pine Cobble Road had not taken out nomination papers for reelection to the school committee as of the morning of Feb. 22.

Williamstown Housing Authority incumbent member Richard Hamblin, 59 Harrison Ave., had not taken out nomination papers for reelection to a five-year housing authority term as of Feb. 22 morning.

Nomination papers have been available since Feb. 1. The deadline for returning nomination papers is 5 p.m. March 21. Nomination papers must contain 28 registered voter signatures to be considered valid.

Election voting is set to occur from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the elementary school on Church Street.

The town meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on May 16 at the town elementary school.
